Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt Shingles in Chicagoland

Asphalt shingles are one of the most commonly used roofing options because of their affordable cost and their ease of installation. While asphalt is a relatively modern roofing material, it has been used for residential and commercial roofs for over 100 years. A qualified roofing contractor should be hired for installing asphalt roof shingles on your home.

Types of Asphalt Shingles

There are two major varieties of asphalt shingles: organic and fiberglass. Fiberglass shingles are made from a woven fiberglass base that is covered with waterproof asphalt and then has ceramic granules embedded into it. Organic mat-based shingles have a base of recycled paper under the asphalt and ceramic.

From there, asphalt shingles come in three major types, each of which provides a different appearance.

Strip shingles were the first type of asphalt shingles and are still one of the most inexpensive types of asphalt shingles used. These shingles are manufactured to look like slate shingles. They are a light-weight roofing material and have a flat appearance at the roof line.

Dimensional shingles, which are also called architectural laminated shingles, are now the most common roofing shingles used in the US. These are heavier than strip shingles and provide a dimensional and visually interesting look for your roof. These typically have a higher level of weather resistance. They typically have higher warranty protections, ranging from 30 years to lifetime warranties.

Premium shingles come in a number of styles and shapes. These shingles are often manufactured to mimic older roofing styles, such as slate and cedar shake roofs.

Durability of Asphalt Shingles

These shingles come in a number of styles, each with different features and different durability. Most asphalt shingles last from 15 to 30 years. A number of premium asphalt shingles have the high impact-resistance that is needed in our area’s sometimes harsh climate. They are resistant to wind, rain, snow and hail. In general, asphalt shingles are not as durable as options like cedar or slate; however, their low up-front cost makes replacement less expensive.

Energy-Efficient Roofing

Certain premium asphalt shingles have improvements such as high solar reflectivity. This means that the roof last longer and is less likely to be damaged by the sun. These also keep houses cooler in the summer, as they are less likely to let heat penetrate the house through the roof, keeping power bills lower.

Asphalt shingles should be professionally installed to ensure durability and to prevent defects that can decrease the life span of your roof. Is it time to replace the roof on your home? Get in touch today and we will send a roofing contractor to provide a free assessment and estimate.
