Getting Ready for Spring Projects

If you need a door replacement, new windows, a new deck or a new roof, spring is the perfect time to get started. These and other renovations can increase your home’s beauty, save you money on utility bills and increase the value of your home. Before you get started, there are a few things that you should do to ensure that the projects go smoothly and that you and your family stay safe throughout the process. Before you call a contractor, start thinking about the following:

1. Pick out your spring projects.

Do you have areas where you are itching to make a change? Create a list of the projects you are considering. Once you’ve thought about which ones you want most, talk to a qualified contractor about the costs, the viability and what you can expect when you are done. In many cases, it can make sense to get multiple bids and proposals.

2. Assess any current conditions.

Is your house up to current codes, or was it built during a time that housing codes were more forgiving? If it’s the latter, any changes will need to comply with current code. Your contractor can work with you to ensure that everything lines up and that the project is compliant.

3. Pull out any as-built drawings that are available.

If you have construction drawings for your home, bring these out when you are having someone do new work. They are necessary for some permits. Often, you will have these available for newer houses, but those built before around 1950 often will not have these available.

4. Clear and clean the area that’s being worked on.

While there is little for you to do while your gutters, roof or deck are being worked on, clearing things out before makes life easier for your contractor. For instance, if gutters are being replaced, move items like deck furniture, your grill and welcome mats so they are not in the way of ladders during work.

5. Talk to your contractor about the timeline.

Once you’ve picked your contractor, it’s time to figure out how involved the project will be. A project gets easier if you know ahead of time how long it will take. Ask your contractor how long each phase will take. In some cases, the time that needs to be allotted to the job will change if they find that there is more work to do. However, they should be able to give you a general guideline in advance.

Some projects can be done in less than a day, others will span several days or a week or more. By getting everything set up properly in advance, you can make your project go more quickly and smoothly and ensure a product you are satisfied with in the end.  Aspen Exterior is happy to help you with all of your upcoming spring projects.  Call us today to learn more.
