Common Roofing Terms Explained

Common Roofing Terms Explained

When you start talking to roofing companies about getting a roof repair or replacement, you can wind up deep in jargon pretty quickly. Our qualified contractors are always happy to answer any questions and feel it is important for you to understand the job. However, a vocabulary cheat sheet couldn’t hurt. These are a few terms you’ll hear when we are discussing the job:

Wood Decking

This is the surface that roofing materials are applied to. It is usually made out of plywood. If it has been damaged by moisture, pests or age, parts of it may have to be replaced. You may also see decking referred to as sheathing.

Ice Shielding

Anywhere that water can collect on a roof needs to be protected. Ice shielding material is used under the shingles to keep moisture from getting inside.

Apron Flashing

This is the metal flashing that is used by the chimney.

This occurs when the Chicago area’s high winds are strong enough to force shingles off the roof deck. If you have blow off damage, it is important to have your roof repaired or replaced to keep water from intruding into your home.

This is a number that indicates how steep your roof is, measured by the rise for very 12 inches of horizontal run on your roof. A roof that is six inches higher every 12 inches has a six-inch slope. The slope of your roof governs which types of shingles can be safely installed.

The lower edge of your roof.

The flat board that is located at the outer edge of the cornice. If there are issues with your roof, this can become damaged by water or pests.

These are particles of crushed rock that are coated with ceramic and fired before being attached to roofing shingles. Finding these particles in your gutters is a sure sign that your roof is wearing out and will need to be replaced.

Ice Dams

When heat is escaping your home, snow can melt and refreeze by the eaves. The result is known as an ice dam; these can push shingles back and cause damage to your home.
